SHINING A LIGHT ON SARCOMA

Volunteer With Us

Sarcoma Cancer Ireland is run almost entirely by volunteers. Our board members are volunteers, our Support Line is answered by volunteers, and our fundraising happens because people across the country give their time. If you would like to be part of it, we would love to hear from you.

Our volunteer network stretches across every county, north and south.

Ways to Get Involved

Support Line volunteer – answer calls and WhatsApp messages from patients and families. Full training and ongoing support are provided. Most of our Support Line volunteers have their own experience of sarcoma, either personally or through someone they love.

Peer supporter – offer one-to-one connection to someone newly diagnosed who wants to talk to a person who has been there. We provide a structured training programme for peer supporters.

Peer support group host – help us run an in-person support group in your area. We are always looking to bring groups to new parts of the country. If there is nothing near you, that may be exactly why we need you.

Fundraising volunteer – help at events, hold a collection, organise something in your area, or join our Fundraising Committee.

Awareness volunteer – share our campaigns, distribute GP flyers to practices in your area, or speak about your experience if you feel able to.

Skills-based volunteering – we are a small charity with a lot to do. Communications, design, finance, governance, IT, event management, healthcare and legal experience are all genuinely useful to us, whether that is on a committee or for a single project.

Who Can Volunteer

Anybody over 18 who cares about this cause. You do not need to have had sarcoma, and you do not need to have lost someone to it. Many of our volunteers are patients or family members; many others simply want to help.

We ask for honesty about how much time you can give. An hour a month is genuinely useful and far better than a commitment that turns into a burden.

What We Offer

  • Training appropriate to your role, and a named contact for support
  • Reimbursement of agreed out-of-pocket expenses
  • The chance to meet others in the sarcoma community
  • Work that visibly makes a difference to people going through the hardest time of their lives

A Note on Support Roles

Volunteering in a support role can bring your own experience of sarcoma back to the surface. That is normal, and we will talk with you about it. If you have been recently bereaved or are in active treatment, we may suggest waiting a while before taking on a support role — not to exclude you, but to look after you.

Get in Touch

Email support@sarcoma.ie or info@sarcoma.ie and tell us a little about yourself, where in the country you are, and what kind of role interests you. Someone will come back to you to talk it through.
