It is the second most common primary malignant bone tumour, occurring most often in adults over the age of 40, although it can affect individuals of any age.
Chondrosarcomas can develop in any bone that contains cartilage, such as the pelvis, ribs, arms, legs and spine, and can also arise in cartilage within joints such as the knee or shoulder. The exact cause is unknown, but certain genetic mutations and inherited conditions, such as Ollier’s disease or Maffucci syndrome, may increase the risk.
