SHINING A LIGHT ON SARCOMA

Get Involved in Advocacy

This charity was built by patients and carers who decided to speak up. You do not need a title, a background in health policy or a large following to make a difference — you need a voice and a willingness to use it.

Simple Things That Genuinely Help

Know the signs, and tell people – a lump bigger than a golf ball, growing, deep or painful; or bone pain that is persistent, worsening, unexplained and present at night. If everyone reading this told five people, that would be worth more than any campaign we could run.

Share our campaigns – following, liking and sharing our posts costs nothing and puts sarcoma in front of people who have never heard of it. July, Sarcoma Awareness Month, is when it counts most.

Bring the GP flyer to your practice – ask your GP surgery, pharmacy, physiotherapist or local clinic whether they would take a copy of Diagnosing Sarcoma: A Guide for GPs. We will post you copies free of charge. Email info@sarcoma.ie.

Tell your story – with your permission, and entirely on your terms, patient and family stories are the single most powerful advocacy tool we have.

Contacting Your Public Representatives

TDs, senators and councillors respond to constituents. If sarcoma care matters to you, tell them so:

  • Find your local TDs and their contact details at oireachtas.ie, or your councillors through your local authority website.
  • Write in your own words. A short, personal email from a constituent carries far more weight than a long template.
  • Say who you are, what happened to you or your family, and what you would like to see change.
  • Ask for something specific — for example, that sarcoma awareness be included in GP education, or that specialist sarcoma staffing be protected.
  • Be polite and be persistent. Follow up if you do not hear back.

If you would like help preparing a letter, or you would like to know our current priorities before you write, contact us at info@sarcoma.ie and we will help.

Join the Advocacy & Education Committee

Our Advocacy & Education Committee drives this work, and we welcome new members with lived experience, professional expertise or simply energy and time. Committees meet online, so where you live is no barrier.

Take Part in Research and Consultations

From time to time we are asked to nominate patient representatives for research studies, advisory panels and public consultations. If you would like to be considered, let us know and we will keep you in mind.

Get in Touch
